Whisky review: Port Ellen
Bit of a special one this, but everyone gets it wrong. Port Ellen is my whisky number three in my all time favourites list. I don’t get to drink much of it courtesy of the fact that all the Port Ellen there ever will be already is.  Although the maltings still supply other distilleries, the Port Ellen distillery itself closed in 1983. And that’s why everyone gets it wrong. They all...

clientsfromhell: Client: “Can you make it so when people land on our website, it’s, like, all black with stars coming out of the screen all whoosh whoosh (does the action) like in that screensaver?” Me: “…” Client: “With the music from Star Wars.” Me: “…” Client: “And it does that for, like, a minute,… Staggering. Some clients are just staggering.

Sweetie review? Not mine: LUV & HAT: HARIBO →
luvandhat: LUV - (To the tune of “Here We Go”) Ha-ri-bo Ha-ri-bo Ha-ri-bo, Ha-ri-bo Ha-ri-bo Ha-ri-BO-OH, Ha-ri-bo Ha-ri-bo Ha-ri-bo, Ha-ri-BO-OH, HA-RI-BO*. I love Haribo, in all its sugary, gnashy-toothed, cloying mainland European glory. Yes, I know that it’s made of the hooves…

Whisky review: Laphroaig
Yum. Laphroaig is, for my money, one of the top 5 single malts. Just. Of the Western Isles it’s one of the smokier whiskies, falling somewhere between Lagavulin and Jura, but not too smokey, like the latter. You can still enjoy the subtle flavours beneath the peat, which the tube helpfully tells me is nutty barley, and the sweet Islay streams. Best enjoyed by a large inglenook fire to...

A week without Social Media (11)
Day 6 - Saturday. Went for a long walk yesterday, to enjoy the Indian Summer. One of the advantages of being self-employed. Ended up using my personal twitter a few times. It was an awful cheat, and I’m deeply ashamed of the lapse. (ahem). Still, today is a weekend, so my style of use would normally be different. Even so, I missed tweeting the rugby this morning, and it was an exciting one...

Day 5 - Friday Update, not a post written at the time!  There was no blog today, I was away from the computer. See why tomorrow!

Day 4 - Thursday evening I was very keen to get on twitter and tweet through #bbcqt The very annoying and daft Caroline Spellman (who, with a name like that, should be a Death Eater from Harry Potter) was sitting next to Peter Oborne. Very entertaining show tonight.  I picked the wrong week. (any week would have been the wrong one)

Day 4 - Thursday afternoon I was on LinkedIn (as is allowed by the rules) and came across a troubling post by one of my connections. But first some background… One of the reasons I decided to ramp up my freelance and contract work was because I had interviewed for a few agencies, digital, media and advertising, and had the same feedback from each: I’m great, well presented, personable,...

Day 4 - Thursday Slipped and defended St Stephen of Fry on the LuvandHat blog. I felt it was right to make the exception considering he took the time for me, recently. Avoiding all the online stuff has been quite refreshing. I’m not more productive or better informed (or more sociable), because I get most of that from the networks. In fact, it’s become apparent that my primary way...

Day 3 - Wednesday Slipped again and posted something on twitter. Whoops. I took it down later, but it shows how easy it is to automatically post something.  Trouble is, I want to look to see what my friends are doing, where they’re going, what they’re saying… and it feels a bit like stalking because I’m not joining in. And who knows, maybe my joining in wouldn’t be...

Day 2 - Tuesday Lunchtime, and I still haven’t seen the rugby results from this morning. I’m waiting for them to come on the news. I didn’t get up bright and early to watch it because I’ve been enjoying tweeting the #rwc11, and didn’t want to feel I was missing out. Besides, it’s not like one of my teams were playing. I’ve been out and about dealing...

Day 1 - Monday: So, end of day one. Absolutely screaming for some social media. I’m desperate to know what’s going on on twitter, who’s listened to what on last.fm, what photos has my best friend @daveystarr posted on instagram…? I’ve had half a dozen incoming calls from clients and friends (mostly asking if I’m alive) which I’ve had to return later from a...

Day 1 - Monday: Seriously. I need to fulfil some criteria before the time runs out, even though I suspect it has already! But this is important, and that fool’s hide is not.

Day 1 - Monday: Very keen to get online and have a rant about the ineffectual deputy head at Number1’s school. I had to leave the client meeting to collect Number 3 because this fool didn’t fulfil his legal obligations to inform parents of an after school detention. So despite being in a meeting, despite me not supposed to be dealing with the kids today I got pulled out to do that. ...

Day 1 - Monday: First mistake: bit of a shocker really seeing as it’s the first day. I signed in on foursquare to client’s restaurant that’s local to Number3’s school while I have a meeting with the landlord. I haven’t done anything for him for over two years, but he’s just reopened after being closed for a couple of weeks as a play to extract the freehold...

A week without Social Media (1)
I know what you’re thinking: Where, exactly, have I been? As an experiment, I decided to take a week without social media. This is the blog, written at the time but with it’s delivery delayed exactly one week. The rules: No social media: No twitter, no blog, no YouTube, no Facebook, no instagram, no google+, no last.fm… no social media! I can look and read, but not participate at...
